Following Victor Wembanyama’s injury, who had been the heavy favorite, Draymond Green launched a media tour to campaign for the Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award. Ultimately snubbed by the voters, the Warriors forward spoke out.

At 35 years old, Draymond Green is well aware that he’s nearing the end of his career, and that may be why he’s so determined during this playoff run. The idea of securing one last championship ring is a dream, and for the first time since their 2022 title, the Golden State front office has managed to build a truly competitive roster.

Stephen Curry is still as good as ever, he showed it with several great performances against the Rockets, while Jimmy Butler is never as strong as in the playoffs. If we add to that a third offensive option like Brendin Podziemski, who scored 26 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, we get a renewed but still experienced group.

But at this stage of his career, Draymond not only dreams of collective success, he would have liked to add an individual distinction to his record. He long campaigned for the DPOY title, but was ultimately outclassed by Evan Mobley, now a two-time winner, and Dyson Daniels. He spoke on his podcast:

I’ve been through this before, it’s not a big deal. I especially want to congratulate Evan Mobley. I’m really very happy to see him win the DPOY. However, I know that Dyson Daniels was demoralized. I know the feeling when it’s the first time you’re in the running but you get beaten. He was great defensively and has to overcome this second place.

After campaigning to be crowned, after complaining for many years about having only one DPOY to his name, Draymond Green is finally happy to see Evan Mobley rewarded. A speech that would probably have been different if the Warriors weren’t in the race for the title. The interior player can put his skills to use for a greater cause.

Draymond Green can say he’s not disappointed, but the fact remains that he long campaigned to win his second DPOY title, proof that he attaches importance to it. He’ll digest it faster with a ring.
